Holy Week is a series of Easter consisting of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, then Easter on Sunday. Palm Sunday is the anniversary of the reception of Jesus in Jerusalem, where Jesus’ followers put palm branches on the road to welcome him. However, the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem was not welcomed by everyone. The declaration of Jesus as the son of God and king of the Jews led Roman authorities and religious hardliners to view Jesus’ coming as a threat. Then, it was followed by Maundy Thursday which is the day of commemoration of the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. On this day Jesus invites his followers to eat bread and drink wine. On this day also Jesus predicted that one of his followers would betray him. Then the prophecy was revealed that Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples had decided to hand Jesus over to the Jewish high priests of the city in exchange for 30 pieces of silver.
Then, on Good Friday, Roman authorities and religious leaders urged the Roman governor Pontius Pilate to kill Jesus. The crucifixion of Jesus took place on this day, where Jesus was tried, tortured, and crucified by being nailed to the cross alive. Then, at his funeral, the body of Jesus was left lying all day. This event is known as Holy Saturday, which is the anniversary of the transition between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection of Jesus.
However, when mourners returned to the tomb on Sunday, the tomb was empty which is the time when Jesus was resurrected. This is what is celebrated as Easter. Easter comes after the Great Night, which is celebrated between sunset on Easter Saturday and sunrise on Easter Sunday. Christians celebrate Easter at sunrise, while Catholics celebrate the ancient liturgy and rite of baptism on the eve of Holy Saturday.
